The Turkish Van is a large, muscular, naturally occurring breed from eastern Turkey, often called the 'swimming cat.' Famous for its unique coat pattern—mostly white body with color restricted to the head and ringed tail—the Van coat is single-layered and water-repellent, feeling soft like cashmere.

Key Breed Traits

  • Fascination with Water: Many Turkish Vans enjoy playing in shallow water, splashing in faucets, or swimming in pools.
  • Signature Van Pattern: Mostly white body with colored head patches (separated by a white blaze) and a fully colored, ringed tail.
  • Powerful & Athletic: Strong shoulders and muscular legs make them powerful jumpers capable of reaching high perches with ease.

Home & Care Considerations

Common Inherited Conditions & Screening

Turkish Vans are robust ancient cats with few genetic disorders. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and hereditary deafness (primarily in solid white or odd-eyed individuals) should be evaluated.

Routine Care, Exercise & Environment

Because their coat lacks a woolly undercoat, mats rarely form; weekly combing keeps fur sleek. Provide sturdy tall cat trees and safe water play options (such as pet fountains). Monitor hydration with our Hydration Calculator.

When to Consult a Veterinarian

Consult your veterinarian if your Turkish Van displays signs of hearing loss, ear scratching, breathing changes, or unexplained weight loss.
