The Selkirk Rex is one of four recognized Rex breeds, distinguished by its heavy round bones, teddy-bear expression, and loose, plush curly coat (unlike the tight waves of the Cornish or Devon Rex). Originating from a naturally curly kitten named Miss DePesto rescued in Montana in 1987, the breed possesses a sweet, patient, and easygoing nature.

Key Breed Traits

  • Teddy Bear Curls: Loose, plush ringlets cover the entire body, accompanied by uniquely crimped or curled whiskers.
  • Patient & Mellow: Exceptionally tolerant and relaxed, making them wonderful family pets for households with children and dogs.
  • Sturdy Round Build: Heavy musculature and solid bone structure inherited from Persian and British Shorthair outcrosses.

Home & Care Considerations

Common Inherited Conditions & Screening

Screen for polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) due to historical outcrosses with Persians and British Shorthairs. Ear canal oil accumulation can also occur due to internal ear curl.

Routine Care, Exercise & Environment

Comb gently once a week; avoid over-brushing which frizzes natural curls. Clean ear canals regularly with vet-approved cleaner. Monitor hydration with our Hydration Calculator.

When to Consult a Veterinarian

Contact a veterinarian if your Selkirk Rex shows ear scratching, discharge, difficulty breathing, or increased thirst and urination.
