The Himalayan (or 'Himmy') is a colorpoint Persian breed developed by crossing Siamese and Persian cats. Combining the calm, affectionate, lap-loving nature of the Persian with vivid blue eyes and pointed fur markings (seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, flame), Himalayans are peaceful, gentle home companions.

Key Breed Traits

  • Colorpoint Long Coat: Features dark points on ears, face, paws, and tail contrasting with a pale cream or white body.
  • Calm & Affectionate: Prefers quiet environments, relaxing on plush furniture or enjoying gentle lap snuggles.
  • High Grooming Commitment: Dense coat mats easily without daily combing and face wiping.

Home & Care Considerations

Common Inherited Conditions & Screening

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), tear duct overflow, polycystic kidney disease (PKD), and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are primary health concerns. Annual kidney ultrasound and facial hygiene are recommended.

Routine Care, Exercise & Environment

Daily combing with a metal comb is essential to remove loose undercoat fur and prevent painful mats. Gently wipe facial skin folds and around eyes daily. Monitor fluid intake with our Hydration Calculator.

When to Consult a Veterinarian

Seek prompt veterinary attention if your Himalayan shows noisy breathing, nasal discharge, eye redness, lethargy, or changes in urinary habits.
