The Bengal was developed by crossing domestic cats with the Asian Leopard Cat (Prionailurus bengalensis). Modern Bengals are bred exclusively Bengal-to-Bengal and are valued for their athletic build and vibrant rosetted or marbled markings.

Key Breed Traits

  • Very high energy: Bengals need significant daily physical and mental stimulation through play, climbing, and enrichment.
  • Social and engaged: Many enjoy water play, leash walks, and learning trick routines.
  • Distinctive coat: Their short, dense, pelt-like coat has a uniquely soft, often glittered feel.

Home & Care Considerations

Common Inherited Conditions & Screening

Screen for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency, and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA-b).

Routine Care, Exercise & Environment

Bengals thrive in homes that prioritize vertical territory, running wheels, and puzzle feeders. Check dietary calorie balance using our Calorie Estimator.

When to Consult a Veterinarian

Seek veterinary advice if your Bengal exhibits lameness, eye cloudiness, lethargy, or digestive distress.
